Our Investment Philosphy
Value & Patience
Our investment philosophy is comprised of three basic tenets, the first of which is that we seek value and patience. Warren Buffet, perhaps the greatest investor of all time, has turned value and patience into billions of dollars. However, in a world that focuses on the hottest stocks and the latest economic problem (the media and even our own industry, are often to blame), the 'anti-values' of impatience and fear are ubiquitous. The result is investors who are confused, fearful and who routinely make largely avoidable mistakes. We know from history that value and patience are an investor's best friend, and we select investment managers who exhibit the same philosophy.
Our second tenet, flexibility, is essential in dealing with the unexpected. Too often, we meet investors who were a sold a product, that, because of taxes, surrender charges, or illiquidity, they can't get out of even if it no longer meets their needs. Our belief is that any investment we recommend must be adaptable to your changing circumstances and never leave you handcuffed.
Our third tenet is that all investments must have a purpose beyond simply 'beating the market'. Without it, investors are reduced to "chasing returns" and likely harming their returns (see link below). We prepare an Investment Policy Statement for you that establishes the long-term purpose of the investment and your acceptable risk level. Most importantly, it provides a benchmark for measuring not only your investment's performance but ours as an advisor.
If all you have in the toolbox is a hammer, everything starts looking like a nail -- hardly a good strategy to develop an investment plan unique to your needs. We pride ourselves in being fully licensed and educated across a broad range of investment options -- from passive to active, ETFs, stocks, bonds, REITs, limited partnerships, mutual funds, and tax-sensitive. We offer access to many of the world's leading investment managers including, but not limited to: (List is current as of 4/2017)
Our primary method of compensation is via a fee. We believe fees are the fairest and best way to align our interests with yours over the long term. Our fees begin at 1% - 1.25% annually, depending on the investment selection, and decrease from there as your assets increase.
In some cases a commissioned-based product may provide you with more flexibility and better meet a specific need. If so, we will walk you through the costs and benefits.
