I've been an investment advisor for 20 years, but my journey into this profession began when I was ten years old. It was then I started receiving my first weekly allowance of 30 cents. I had to give 10 cents to church, 10 cents went into an interest-bearing savings account that couldn't be spent, and the remaining 10 cents could be spent on anything I wanted. I soon realized that by saving my spending money, I could buy things larger than a piece of Double Bubble. So, by the time I had my driver's license, I had enough money to buy my own car. By the time I was headed to college, I had several thousand dollars in the savings account for school expenses. And now as a professional, I still devote a portion of my earnings to charity.
Life is complicated, but investing doesn't have to be. My parents taught me this with a 30 cent allowance, and I still follow and teach these lessons. Having an investment goal and a plan to achieve that goal is far more important than whether your investments outearned your neighbor's.
By the way, living in Colorado is wonderful! I get to enjoy the high country through backpacking, snowshoeing, rafting, exploring old mining communities and ruins, mountain biking and fishing (see photos below). I also enjoy reading, particularly on the subjects of Lincoln and the Civil War.
